It has been contested by nearly all our great horses for the past 60 years. It was moved from Jerome to Morris Park in 1890, then to Belmont in 1905.

Hastings, Jean Bereaud, Commando, Africander, Tanya, Burgomaster, Peter Pan, Colin, The Finn, Friar Rock, Sir Barton, Man o’ War, Zev, American Flag, Blue Larkspur and Gallant Dox were winners of the Belmont.

Its history is the most important chapter in American racing.

The Belmont is a mile-and-a-half, the race starting in front of the grandstand, was once around.

A quartet of little tractors pulling harrows roared around the track just before the race, smoothing out the surface. Another tractor pulled the starting stalls or “gate” opposite the judges’ flower-bowered little pagoda.
